Custody: what actually holds your key

“Non-custodial” is the most abused word in this category. Almost every terminal claims it. The claim is usually defensible and almost always incomplete, because it describes a legal posture rather than a mechanism. The question worth asking is narrower and answerable: which machine generates your private key, and which machine is holding it right now?

This is the distinction that gets lost. A bot-generated key can be described as non-custodial in good faith — you can export it, and the operator will tell you the wallet is yours.
